Story
Welcome to National Office’s No Power 24hour Team Page!
On 14 October 2016 at 3pm, the whole office will ‘switch off’. All of us will meet on level 3 and be ‘Red Cross Connected’. What does this mean? Come along to find out!
Our goal? Get 30 people to join No Power 24hour and raise $1500. Help us make it happen – join No Power 24hour or sponsor one of your colleagues to do it!
Watch this space for more information!
Any questions? Pop in on 3rd floor and talk to Elodie or call her on 04 494 1319 or email her.
What will the 24 hours without power look like?
In a real situation, a power cut can be due to many things – from a major earthquake in the entire region cutting power for days, to a problem with your meter reader causing a power cut in your house only. Here are a couple of different scenarios of a power cut that participants can base their experience on:
The Big One
There’s been an earthquake and your entire city’s power is down. You cannot use anything that requires power, both at home or anywhere else in your city. This means you must pretend that supermarkets are closed, public transport is suspended, there are no cafés or restaurants open, your neighbours or friends have no power, and of course your own home has been affected too.
Take it easy
Due to a technical problem with your electricity reader, which can only be fixed on Monday, you are the only one in your neighbourhood without power. Life goes on as normal for most people around you, so you can use that opportunity to connect with your neighbours and get their help – use their fridge to keep things cold, ask to borrow their BBQ, etc. Supermarkets are still open and public transport is still running. However, once home, you can’t use any item that needs power.
Whichever way you decide to do it, there will be no power at home and we encourage you all to get help from friends and neighbours to get you through.
Activity
New Zealand Red Cross
New Zealand Red Cross is many things to many people – a hot meal, a safe drive to the hospital, going door-to-door after a disaster, a good start for refugees or knowledge that our aid workers are helping overseas in true Kiwi style.
We have been helping Kiwis for the past 100 years with our many services: refugee resettlement, disaster relief and preparedness, first aid training for adults and children, Christchurch recovery, teaching humanitarian laws to teenagers and community support programmes such as Meal on Wheels and Community Transport. Overseas, Red Cross is at the forefront of emergency response to disasters: first aid to injured people and first aid training in the Pacific, relief items (food, shelter) and Kiwi aid workers.
Start fundraising now to support your own community as well as people in need overseas. Thank you for your support and remember that every dollar counts!
